WASHINGTON, DC-Metro planning officials say that the best way to help reduce congestion on the rail system is to add new stations and connections.
While some congestion relief proposals floated recently have called for adding longer cars, developing streetcar, light rail or bus rapid transit systems, Metro officials say more stations and tunnels are required, according to the Washington Post.
Metro planners say the region needs 10 new stations and four “super stations” that would add capacity and connections around two Farragut Square stations, Union Station, the Capitol South station, and the Pentagon.
The proposed stations and connections address the need to expand capacity in the transit system's core, says Shyam Kannan, Metro's chief planner. “The inner lining, where we share tracks for two lines, worked for 40 years, but becomes a problem going forward given the demands of the system.” See story in the Washington Post.
