REVERE, MA-Mohegan Sun and the City of Revere have reached a community host agreement to develop a gaming resort at the Suffolk Downs racetrack. The Boston Globe reported that the Connecticut-based gaming firm would pay Revere $33 million upfront and then make annual payments of at least $25 million to $30 million. The deal must be approved by Revere voters in a referendum.

“This agreement formalizes the strong partnership we've quickly established with Revere, and lays out the many ways the city and its residents will benefit from Mohegan Sun Massachusetts,” said Mitchell Etess, chief executive of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, when the agreement was announced on Monday. Mohegan Sun wants to build a $1-billion resort on about 42 acres in Revere owned by Suffolk Downs, which the casino operator would lease. Plans call for about 4,000 slot machines, 100 table games and a poker room.

The casino proposal comes on the heels of a split decision by voters in Revere and neighboring East Boston, where part of the racetrack is located. Although Revere voters said yes on a referendum to build a casino at Suffolk Downs, East Boston voters gave it a thumbs-down. That same day, Mohegan Sun lost a casino referendum in Palmer, a rural town in western Massachusetts. Click here to read the complete Boston Globe article.
