LAS VEGAS-The development team behind the $350 million MGM Resorts Arena proposal have cleared another hurdle, receiving county approval for a land use request.
Clark County commissioners, sitting as the County Zoning Commission, approved land use applications Wednesday that will allow the process to continue, according to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“We're pleased the Commission reviewed and approved our land use and zoning applications for the Las Vegas Arena project,” MGM Resorts International said in a statement. “We're eager to move ahead and intend to break ground this summer and open the new facility in 2016.”
The company and development partner AEG Entertainment hope to build a 20,000-seat arena behind New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts on the Strip. The next move for MGM Resorts is to relocate staff and equipment from office buildings on the site. The paper says those buildings will be demolished to allow for site prep. The team will also need to finalize design plans and submit them for review. MGM/AEG hopes to use the arena the arena for a variety of content, such as concerts, award shows, sports events, boxing matches and mixed martial arts fights.
Late last month, Las Vegas businessman (and former NBA player) Jackie Robinson and group of investors floated a separate plan to build a $1.3 billion arena, hotel and casino complex at a different location on the Strip.
