WASHINGTON, DC-Tommy Wells, a DC Councilman who is also a candidate for mayor, says that a plan to build a new stadium for the D.C. United soccer team should include new affordable housing.
The new housing should be offered to households making an annual salary of between $45,000 to $65,000, Wells says, and could be added to the existing Reeves Center. DC Mayor Vincent Gray is looking to trade the Reeves Center to developer Akridge in exchange for land for the new soccer stadium, according to the Washington Post.
Gray has made building affordable housing a priority in his re-election bid, pledging to spend $100 million to lower the cost of housing for seniors, government workers and other medium- and low-income residents.
Gray spokesman Pedro Ribeiro terms the proposal by Councilman Wells as “laughable and absurd.”
“All of a sudden, during the middle of a campaign, a council member with precious little record to speak of on affordable housing finds religion on the issue,” Ribeiro states. See story in the Washington Post.
