OAHU, HI-Former San Francisco 49er Jerry Rice recently joined DeBartolo Development president and chief operating officer Edward Kobel, Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie and other dignitaries for a ground blessing of the Florida developer's $500 million Ka Makana Alii regional shopping mall project in West Oahu.

Rice, who was in Honolulu as part of the Pro Bowl festivities, is a Hall of Fame receiver, and the 49ers were once owned by Edward DeBartolo Jr., founder and CEO of DeBartolo Holdings LLC.

Construction of the 1.4-million-square-foot mall, will begin with with a 700,000-square-foot first phase made up of more than 90 shops and restaurants, a department store, cinema and hotel.

A second phase will include 200,000 square feet of LEED-certified office space at the mall.

Ka Makana Alii is expected to generate more than $140 million in lease rent for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands over 65 years. The land is owned by the Department.
