CHICAGO-The city's Plan Commission approved a scaled-back plan for two residential high-rise buildings that will be part of the redevelopment of the former Children's Memorial Hospital in Lincoln Park.

Despite objections from some nearby residents, the plan to build more than 600 housing units, as well as retail and office space at the property near DePaul University, secured unanimous approval on Thursday from the Chicago Plan Commission, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The development to be built on a six-acre parcel would also include a smaller condominium building and a senior citizen housing center. Supporters of the project believe the development will revitalize the area that has suffered since the Children's Memorial Hospital, now Lurie Children's Hospital, moved to the Streeterville area in 2012.

The project to be built by locally-based development firm McCaffery Interests Inc. has received the support of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, but still must receive the approval of the City Council. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
