CHICAGO-President Barack Obama is scheduled to announce on Tuesday that the city of Chicago has been selected as the site for a $320-million digital manufacturing institute.
The institute will be financed by $70 million in federal funds and another $250 million in private and other government monies, according to the Chicago Tribune. President Obama is also expected to announce at the Tuesday White House briefing that the city of Detroit has been selected as the site for a lightweight and modern metals manufacturing institute. The administration set up a 3-D printing pilot site in Youngstown, OH in 2012 and a few weeks ago announced a new institute in Raleigh, N.C., focused on energy-efficient electronics.
"This is clearly, without a doubt, one of the most significant things to secure Chicago's long-term economic future," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says. "It is the best insurance policy you can buy, which is major research capacity."
Chicago's proposal calls for the institute to be housed in a leased building on the northern end of Goose Island. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
