ANNAPOLIS, MD—The state Board of Public Works approved a land sale that will allow developer Southern Management Corp. to build a new luxury hotel and conference center at the University of Maryland, College Park.
The plan calls for a $115-million hotel to be built on a three-acre parcel across from Route 1 by the main gates of the campus, according to the Baltimore Sun.
The University of Maryland selected David Hillman, CEO of Southern Management Corp., to develop the hotel/conference center project. John Boardman, who represents a Washington-based hotel workers union, expressed concerns about the selection process and stated that the university abandoned conventional competitive bidding procedures.
UMCP President Wallace D. Loh told the Board of Public Works that the state university system was exempt from the state's procurement laws for real estate transactions. The Board of Public Works legal staff sided with Loh. The Board of Public Works approved the land sale in a unanimous vote on Wednesday. See story in the Baltimore Sun.
