GAINESVILLE, FL—Construction firm Skanska reports that it has signed a contract valued at $225 million to build an expansion of the UF (University of Florida) Shands Cardiovascular/Neuroscience Hospital here.

The project involves a 48,000-square-meter expansion and will be built adjacent to the UF Health/Shands Cancer Hospital, which was completed by Skanska USA in 2009.

Construction on the hospital expansion project is expected to begin in the fall or winter of this year and be completed by the fall of 2017. The contract will be included in order bookings for Skanska USA Building of Parsippany, NJ for the first quarter of 2014. Skanska is headquartered in Ostersund, Sweden.

UF Health officials announced its plans for the expansion of the cardiovascular/neuroscience hospital in August 2013. Plans announced at that time called for a 240-bed tower that would include approximately 18 state-of-the-art operating rooms and intensive care units, along with complementary outpatient facilities.
