WASHINGTON, DC—The long-anticipated redevelopment of the McMillan Sand Filtration Plant is now before the DC Zoning Commission.

The DC Planning Commission plans to hold three public hearings on the 2.1-million–square-foot redevelopment plan with the first scheduled last night. The project began seven years ago when Vision McMillan Partners was tabbed by DC officials to lead the redevelopment initiative, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The planned-unit development secured approval by the Historic Preservation Review Board six months ago. Some of the merits of the project that is expected to draw considerable public input during the zoning commission hearings, include: preservation of all 24 historic buildings on the 25-acre site, a walkable community design, a 17,000-square-foot community center and pool, affordable housing, 12 acres of public open space, 3,200 permanent jobs, and $1.2 billion in new tax revenue.
