DULLES, VA—The Children's Science Center announced on Tuesday a phased development plan to establish a museum in northern Virginia eventually establishing a 53,000-square-foot facility at the Kincora development here.

The Children's Science Center is an interactive museum for children that will offer hands-on-exhibits, activities and programs focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The first phase coined "Museum Without Walls," is a traveling museum offering hands-on science, technology and mathematics (STEM) activities at different venues and varied formats. The second phase will be a 5,400-square-foot hands-on exploration center located at the Fair Oaks Mall.

The center plans to establish the 53,000-square-foot interactive science museum at the 424-acre Kincora project that is projected to include more than 4 million square feet of office space, 500,000 square feet of retail, 1,400 condos and apartments as well as hotel and community space. The museum is reportedly expected to cost $40 million to complete, according to the Washington Business Journal, and is scheduled to open in 2019.

"Today we are putting a stake in the ground…actually two," says Nene Spivey, Children's Science Center Executive Director. “After years of searching for a suitable home, we have achieved our longtime goal to be located within the Dulles region, where families and high-tech industry partners are plentiful, and where we can offer a regional resource serving multiple jurisdictions in northern Virginia and beyond.”
