LONDON—Sixteen-year industry veteran Richard Barkham is joining CBRE Group as global chief economist, effective June 16. Barkham will be based in London, and will report to Nick Axford, CBRE's global head of research.

In his new capacity, Barkham will work with senior executives to lead development of CBRE's view on global economic, financial and real estate market trends. He'll also be responsible for producing articles and market commentaries and speaking before industry groups with a view toward building the company's reputation for thought leadership, and will also work with Axford and regional research heads to coordinate the analytical activities of research teams across the globe.

Mike Lafitte, CBRE's COO, calls Barkham “a premier real estate economist.” Axford adds that Barkham is “regularly sought out for his views on commercial real estate, and his insights on the interaction between macroeconomic trends, strategy and real estate market conditions are second to none.”

Barkham comes to CBRE from London-based investment firm Grosvenor, where he has served as group research director since 2006 and as non-executive director of Grosvenor Fund Management since 2011. He is also a visiting professor of real estate economics at University College London.
