BRIGHTON, MA—Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh appears to be leaning toward supporting the controversial $80-million Cleveland Circle Cinema redevelopment project here.
Some neighbors of the proposed project at the shuttered theatre have been vocal opponents of the plan that calls for the replacement of the theatre at 399 Chestnut Ave. with a mixed-use development of residential, retail and hospitality space, according to the Boston Business Journal.
“It's a good project and there has been some changes made,” Mayor Walsh says. “People have a right to have a voice in the community. If we are building a 60-story tower in an area that's zoned for three stories, then that's too much density. But here we are talking about a development that will result in a revitalization of the Cleveland Circle area.”
Boston Development Group of Newto, MA presented its most recent plan on Tuesday that calls for a 218,520-square-foot development that would feature two buildings, including a 95,030-square-foot, 162-room Hilton Garden hotel, as well as 92 apartments totalling 109,490 square feet. A total of 14,000 square feet of ground floor retail space and 188 parking spaces are also part of the plan.
The Cleveland Circle Cinema closed in 2008 after 68 years of operation. See story in the Boston Business Journal.
