SANTA CLARA, CA—Ericsson plans to occupy a new 400,000 square foot campus at Santa Clara Square that will consolidate the tech giant's Silicon Valley operations. When completed next year, it will bring together approximately 2,000 Ericsson staff dedicated to driving innovation in IP and TV and media.
The Stocholm-based tech firm says its new campus builds on Ericsson's commitment to strategic investment in the region, including the acquisition last September of Microsoft's Mediaroom TV platforms and services division.
“Ericsson's new campus unites our rapidly expanding Silicon Valley workforce and creates an environment that will inspire our employees and customers,” says Per Borgklint, senior vice president for Ericsson. “So much of our research and development is built on internal and external collaboration. Together with our customers and partners, Ericsson is driving IP, TV and Media innovation, and accelerating development of the media enabled, interoperable and programmable network of tomorrow.”
Santa Clara Square, being developed by Irvine Company, will include over 400,000 square feet of workspace for Ericsson in two buildings, located along the Great America/Bowers corridor at Highway 101, south of Levi's Stadium. Interior design will feature Ericsson's open and flexible workspace environment, which supports enhanced collaboration. The facility will also feature a state-of-the-art Ericsson Experience Center for customers and partners. Construction is underway and the facility is expected to be available for Phase One occupancy during Q3 2015.
Ericsson will move personnel from numerous locations, and it will leave San Jose where it currently occupies about 300,000 square feet.
"Ericsson's expansion in Silicon Valley has grown in tandem with the region's increasing gravitational pull on the technology sector," said Bina Chaurasia, chief human resources officer. “Our company has a growing need for software engineers and employees with a technology savvy skill set who can partner, create, learn, sustain and innovate; helping us move toward what Ericsson calls the Networked Society.” Chaurasia will maintain her global role, but will relocate to the Bay Area.
Ericsson says Silicon Valley plays a critical role in its efforts to drive innovation and technology. Since 2009, the region has been the center of development for Ericsson's IP solutions.
"Over the years, Ericsson's growing presence in Silicon Valley has significantly enhanced our ability to innovate and collaborate with our customers and partners in the region. With our new campus, we're accelerating Ericsson research, development and innovation even further," said Maya Strelar-Migotti, vice president of development. Silicon Valley is also a center for Ericsson innovation in TV and Media.
Ericsson has 15,000 total employees across the United States and Canada, and has invested $7 billion in US acquisitions over the past six years, with plans for further growth in the US.
