NEW YORK CITY—Numerous construction projects under way all around town are in danger of grinding to a halt. That's because crane operators may be headed for a strike, according to Capital New York.
The workers, represented by the Building Contractors Association, were authorized to walk-out on jobs after the union and Locals 14 and 15 failed to reach an agreement in contract negotiations on Monday. The existing contract expired at midnight.
BCA's members work for some 300 construction companies, including some of the city's largest firms. BCA did not return requests from GlobeSt.com seeking comment. Construction giant Skanska declined to comment.
If the unions strike, sources say construction would slow down at sites like the World Trade Center and 30 Park Place (formerly known as 99 Church), where Larry Silverstein is building a Four Seasons Hotel and condos. Silverstein spokespersons did not respond to requests for comment from GlobeSt.com by press time. The Related Cos., which is building the world's largest ever private development with Hudson Yards, did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
