SILVER SPRING, MD—Washington Property Co. has agreed to build, at no cost, a new facility for Montgomery County to provide homeless services. In exchange the company is receiving the deed to three contiguous land parcels totaling 1.5 acres where the current homeless facility, called Progress Place, is located. These sites are next to WPC's new Solaire-Silver Spring apartment community, at 1150 Ripley St.

WPC plans to develop the second phase of Solaire-Silver Spring with 380-plus new apartments on its newly acquired site once it completes the new Progress Place, which will be build next to a county fire station at 8110 Georgia Ave.

WPC will break ground on Progress Place in about a year. The facility will have three floors providing services to the county's homeless population, plus a fourth floor with 21 personal living quarters for people transitioning into permanent housing. The county government will operate the center.
