WASHINGTON, DC—A consortium led by the National Capital Planning Commission is looking at ways to revive the Pennsylvania Ave. area of the district.
The newly launched program entitled the “Pennsylvania Avenue Initiative” also includes the District, the General Services Administration and the National Park Service, according to the Washington Post. A public workshop has been planned for July 23.
Among the issues facing Pennsylvania Avenue is that federal buildings along the southern side of the avenue are bound by security requirements, which thwart retail and sidewalk cafes that populate many other sections of the district.
Gerry Widdicombe, director of economic development for the Downtown Business Improvement District, says the area's tired condition is the result of poor urban design that was approved before the District was granted home rule. “It's like a bad '70s show,” he adds. See story in the Washington Post.
