SILVER SPRING, MD—The National Labor College campus here has been sold to the Amalgamated Transit Union for $31.4 million.

The union, which has more than 190,000 members in the U.S. and Canada, is intending to relocate its international headquarters from Friendship Heights and use the 46-acre campus for training and education of its membership, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Union President Larry Hanley says there are plans to renovate the main building—the Meany Center—on the campus..

"The principal development we're interested in is in developing the minds and skills of people to restore democracy from being stripped away from the U.S. and Canada," Hanley says.

The union had been in contract on the property since the spring. An earlier plan by the National Labor College to sell the campus to the Reid Temple AME Church fell through. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
