ATLANTIC CITY—Despite recent comments from Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian that a very strong buyer has emerged for the troubled Showboat Atlantic City Hotel and Casino, a spokesman for its owner says he doesn't expect any news on a potential sale for the next several weeks.
Gary Thompson, a spokesman for Caesars Entertainment, which owns the Showboat and three other Atlantic City casinos, says the company doesn't “anticipate any news to occur any time in the next several weeks,” in connection with the possible sale of the Showboat, according to the Press of Atlantic City. Caesars has previously stated that the Showboat would close on Aug. 31 unless a buyer could be found, potentially putting 2,100 employees at the property out of work.
Bob McDevitt, president of Local 54 of UNITE-HERE, which represents approximately 1,000 of Showboat's workers, is urging Caesars disclose information about the sales talks.
“We believe that Caesars has an obligation to reveal what's happening to the Casino Control Commission and Division of Gaming Enforcement,” he says. See story in the Press of Atlantic City.
