ATLANTIC CITY, NJ—Beginning next week an estimated 6,000 casino workers are expected to file for unemployment insurance in connection with the closures of the Showboat Casino Hotel and Revel this weekend and Trump Plaza on Sept. 16.
With the closing earlier this year of the Atlantic Club, this beachside resort has hemorrhaged more than 8,000 casino-related positions or a quarter of its overall workforce.
Local 54 of Unite-HERE, the main casino worker' union, is launching a resource center next week to help ex-casino workers file for unemployment, register for health insurance, and get information on food stamps and other assistance, according to the Associated Press.
"Since we first heard news that these casinos were planning to close, we have worked relentlessly to keep these properties open," Local 54 President Bob McDevitt says. "We are currently in the process of making plans to continue to advocate for these workers. Right now, we are focused on making sure that the basic needs of all of the affected workers are met."
