ROCHESTER, NY—The city of Rochester lost one of its leading businessmen and visionaries committed to redeveloping this upstate city's downtown.
Larry Glazer, CEO of locally-based Buckingham Properties and his wife Jane, were killed when a plane the developer was piloting crashed in Jamaica on Friday after the aircraft became unresponsive over the Atlantic Ocean.
Glazer was nicknamed the “Patron Saint” of Rochester for his extensive downtown Rochester holdings. Buckingham Properties owns, co-owns, or manages nearly 13 million square feet of real estate space, including the Midtown Tower, Xerox Square, and the Bausch and Lomb building in downtown Rochester, according to The Real Deal.
Glazer had big plans to improve downtown Rochester and had proposed a project called “The Grove,” that was to feature retail space, a movie theater, and perhaps a hotel.
In a previously published report in City Newspaper, Glazer said, “My vision starts with the idea that downtown can come back and it will be vibrant. It will be different than it was. But I've spent the last few years traveling around this country looking at downtowns, and I see what they've done. And I'm telling you that there's no reason why Rochester can't do it, too.” See story in The Real Deal.
