BALTIMORE, MD—The Port of Baltimore officially opened a new $22-million berth at its Masonville/Fairfield Marine Terminal that will be used to load and upload automobiles and trucks from ships docking and departing from the port.
The new berth is larger and stronger than the existing berth, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.
"That means that bigger, heavier automobiles and roll-on/roll-off machinery can be so much better accommodated," says Maryland Transportation Secretary James T. Smith Jr. With the new berth in operation, the port is hopeful to ship more than 800,000 vehicles annually in coming years.
With two berths now servicing the auto industry, it could increase efficiency at the port, according to Michael Rye, port manager for shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics. "Having two working berths will allow auto manufacturers at Fairfield to see their cars quicker, to load out quicker, to deliver out quicker. There will hopefully be less berth conflicts, less schedule conflicts," he says. See story in the Baltimore Business Journal.
