WASHINGTON, DC—The DC Public Library, which originally estimated it would only need about 200,000 square feet of space at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library for library services, has sharpened its pencils and decided it needs considerably more space at the 440,000-square-foot building.

In fact, the DC Library now believes, after receiving more than 3,000 comments from the public, that it requires the entire building plus a new fifth floor, according to the Washington Business Journal. A mixed-use addition on top of the fifth floor is also an option.

The renovation of the MLK Library is projected to cost approximately $250 million. The District has committed approximately $200 million to the renovation.

The National Capital Planning Commission is currently reviewing the project. The District Pubic Library has begun the process of seeking interim space, which could be in a downtown office building. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
