LOS ANGELES—Bernards has been tapped to build and design a new six-story tower at the Henry Mayo Hospital in the Santa Clarita Valley. The $110-million project will add 116 beds to the 238-bed not-for-profit community hospital and trauma center. Completion of the tower is scheduled for May 2018.
Located at 23845 McBean Parkway in Valencia, CA, the development is 160,000 square feet and will connect to directly to the hospital. It will feature a dedicated maternity floor with two anti-partum and post-partum private room beds, two labor/delivery/recovery private room beds and two C-section operating rooms. Three floors of the tower will be dedicated to medical and surgical private room beds. The hospital will also feature a helipad roof, a new loading and receiving dock and a kitchen and dining area. The remaining floor will be left as a shell for future development of 33 additional private room beds.
Bernards is partnering with HMC Architects to design the project. Bernards explains that healthcare facilities in Southern California due to requirements and approvals from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. They will maneuver through this process by utilizing technology, like BIM and handheld tablets and bluebeam software that converts drawings to PDFs. This technology also helps the team to cut down on constructions costs and labor. Bernards did not respond to a request for comment before the publication of this story.
Bernards is familiar with the requirements and approval process. The builder also broke ground on the Tehachapi Health Care District, a $56-million 25-bed hospital development in Tehachapi, CA. Stephen Wen of SWA Architects is designing the hospital.
