BALTIMORE—Zahler Development has secured preliminary approval from the city to increase the number of residential units in its proposed Calvary Street Loft project.
The historic conversion project, if approved as is, would now feature 56 units. Its original plan called for 47 apartment units. The project's expansion is due in large part to the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation allowing Zahler demolish a corner rowhouse that was damaged by fire and incorporate it into a more streamlined building design, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.
The new design will also facilitate more retail on the first floor of the building located in the Mount Vernon section of the city. The corner rowhouse, located at North Calvert and East Read streets, is now designed as a four-story "bookend" to the building that will also include a former garage at 816 N. Calvert St. On top of the garage and the former rowhouse property, Zahler is planning a two-story addition that will be set back from the front of the building.
