MARIETTA, GA—The Georgia division of Dallas, TX-based Balfour Beatty Construction's has been hired as construction manager for the renovation of Building D on the Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) campus here.

The project, which broke ground recently, is scheduled to be completed before the 2015 fall semester begins. Building D, referred to on campus as the Mathematics Building, is one of the original buildings on the SPSU campus. A total of 20 classrooms and 14 faculty offices will be renovated in the 27,000-square-foot facility that was constructed in the 1960s.

The new classrooms will contain new, state-of-the art A/V technology. The project also includes upgrades of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to support current demands and requirements for space to support instruction, Balfour Beatty states. Lord Aeck Sargent will provide design services for the project.

This is the first construction project Balfour Beatty is working on for SPSU. However, nine employees of the company's Atlanta office are SPSU graduates, in addition to two current interns. “We are excited to continue our relationship with SPSU,” says Kip Stokes, business unit leader for Balfour Beatty. “This project will allow us to apply the latest innovations in construction and technology, and deliver the best possible product to the school and for the Cobb County community.”

Chad McLeod, Balfour Beatty's director of business development and SPSU alumnus, adds, “Giving back to and being involved with the educational institution that provided the knowledge and passion I have for construction is inspiring. It means a lot to be able to give back to SPSU by renovating this building."
