COLLEGE PARK, MD—The University of Maryland unveiled a $155-million development on Monday that would repurpose the Cole Field House as an indoor training facility for football, the construction of a new training complex and an innovation lab.

The project is geared to keeping the university in line with other Big Ten Conference schools that already have indoor sports facilities. In addition, the innovation lab would help recruit athletes as well as other aspiring entrepreneurs, according to the Baltimore Sun.

"Maryland really has a chance to brand itself as the entrepreneurship university," says Under Armour founder and CEO Kevin Plank, who is also a University of Maryland graduate that has been involved in the new field house plans and intends to make a contribution in connection with the project.

The athletic complex, which is awaiting Board of Regents approval, is to be funded in part with $25 million in state funds and $25 million from the university. The remainder will be privately funded.

The first phase of the project—in which Cole is to be repurposed into the practice facility—is scheduled to be completed in April 2017. See story in the Baltimore Sun.
