NEW YORK CITY—The Rockefeller family is reportedly leaving its long-time home 30 Rockefeller Plaza and relocating operations to 1 Rockefeller Plaza by the middle of next year.
Billionaire John D. Rockefeller and his son, John Jr., broke ground for 30 Rockefeller Plaza in the midst of the Great Depression. The property was completed and opened its doors for the first time in 1933.
Approximately 44 staff members will move to a 19,000-square-foot space at 1 Rockefeller Plaza. Rockefeller & Company, which manages the investments of the Rockefellers and other high net worth families, now operates out of space at 10 Rockefeller Plaza, according to the New York Times.
“We decided to start again at 1 Rock,” David Rockefeller Jr. says. “This is the first time this generation has gotten to say what their needs are.”
Fourteen years ago, the Rockefeller family sold 30 Rock and nine other Rockefeller Center office buildings in the 22-acre complex to Jerry I. Speyer and the Lester Crown family of Chicago in a $1.85-billion transaction. The family remained in the 30 Rockefeller Plaza building occupying one floor of the property.
