PITTSBURGH, PA—United States Steel Corp. will relocate its corporate headquarters operations from 600 Grand St. to a new headquarters building to be built at the site of the former Civic Arena in the city's lower Hill District.

Adjacent to CONSOL Energy Center, the 250,000-square-foot building will be owned and operated by a joint venture between Clayco and Pittsburgh Arena Real Estate Redevelopment LP, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In its announcement on Monday, United States Steel officials say the new headquarters, to be completed in 2017, will retain 800 jobs at its new location and anchor new development ventures in the region. The new headquarters project was announced by United States Steel Corp. president and CEO Mario Longhi and Pittsburgh Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse. The new headquarters facility will also house employees currently based in a number of locations, which will provide significant cost savings for the company.

United States Steel Corp.'s current world headquarters is located in the U. S. Steel Tower, which was completed in 1971. The 62-story tower is the tallest building in downtown Pittsburgh.

"As we continue on our Carnegie Way transformation journey and write the next chapter in the history of U. S. Steel, we are proud that our roots will remain firmly planted in Pittsburgh as we call the lower Hill our new home," says Longhi. "These headquarters are an important investment in our employees and our future, as we foster increased collaboration far beyond the walls of this new building."

"U. S. Steel has been such an integral part of Pittsburgh's heritage, and now this iconic company is leading the way on an exciting and transformational development for the 21st century," says Morehouse. "By placing its new headquarters here, U. S. Steel will be a catalyst for development on a site that we envision as modern urban mix of residential, office and retail space. It is a great day for Pittsburgh and a great day for our region."

The new headquarters building will be constructed with sustainable building practices for U. S. Green Building Council LEED version 3 certification, company officials say. Sustainability practices will include using U. S. Steel products where appropriate.
