WILMINGTON, DE—The Delaware College of Art and Design is undertaking expansion initiatives involving enhanced studio and classroom space as well as student housing.
Next to DCAD, the college plans to occupy the first floor of Buccini/Pollin Group's, five-story apartment building at 606 N. Market St. DCAD President Stuart Baron says the school will house sculpture studios there. "It enables us to enhance our fine-arts program," Baron says. "We were hoping we can provide space right in front to display the students' work."
The apartment building is expected to be done next year. In addition, the college is also renovating it second floor at its 600 N. Market St. building. The unused 8,000 square feet on the second floor is being improved to house classroom, computer lab and office space, according to the News Journal.
DCAD, the Longwood Foundation and the Laffey-McHugh Foundation have all invested $500,000 into the project. DCAD is also considering renovating its Saville building—one of the college's two dormitories to accommodate student growth. Baron says that work on that project will not begin until student enrollment grows from its current 200 level to 275. See story in the News Journal.
