ATLANTIC CITY, NJ—One option being considered by state political leaders to turn around Atlantic City's fortunes is to create a non-profit development corporation that would help formulate new development projects here.
One scenario could involve demolishing the shuttered Trump Plaza casino in order to make way for walkable retail and restaurant space, according to The Inquirer.
The non-profit agency would be modeled after the successful The New Brunswick Development Corp., which has channeled successful urban redevelopment projects in New Brunswick for decades.
"The gentrification in New Brunswick is the best of any city in the state of New Jersey, so why not model off of a winner?" Jon F. Hanson, chair of Governor Chris Christie's Advisory Commission on New Jersey Gaming, Sports and Entertainment, said.
Successful projects include building a new Middlesex County administration building, renovating the county courthouse, and building housing for Rutgers students. State legislative leaders have met twice to discuss Atlantic City's future and are expected to reconvene in January to review this and other proposals. See story in The Inquirer.
