PHILADELPHIA—Hard details on lost jobs and new jobs coming to the region will likely become clearer in time as GlaxoSmithKline undertakes a consolidation of its research operations to suburban Philadelphia locations, but also implements job cuts at its commercial pharmaceutical operations here.
The company did not provide specific figures on how many job cuts will take place in the area but noted that it expects the loss of several hundred U.S. employees in its commercial operations and similar job losses in its research and development sector, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The pharmaceutical firm employs approximately 1,000 workers at its offices in the Philadelphia Navy Yard Corporate Center and more than 3,500 at two suburban Philadelphia campuses. In research and development, the majority of the affected jobs will be in Research Triangle Park, NC as the company states it plans to establish research hubs in the Philadelphia region — where it has facilities in Upper Merion and Upper Providence.
