DOUGLASVILLE, GA—An $11.7-million expansion and renovation at WellStar Douglas Hospital here that included the addition of 16 intensive care unit rooms and nine acute rehabilitation unit rooms has been completed.
The project undertaken by Atlanta-based Batson-Cook Construction also involved the renovation of the emergency department and the vertical expansion on top of the main lobby and the medical imaging department at the Douglas campus included a new cafeteria, new elevators and space for future expansions. The construction started in the third quarter of 2013 and finished 39 weeks later. At the completion of the project, WellStar Douglas Hospital added a total of 46,000 square feet and renovated 5,000 square feet.

An emphasis was placed on infection control during construction, which included risk assessment meetings between hospital staff and project supervisors. Lean construction techniques were utilized to facilitate and streamline the construction process for the WellStar Douglas project. Baton-Cook states that all components of construction were analyzed to ensure a clean and smartly run job site.
