WASHINGTON, DC—Former DC Councilwoman Muriel Bowser was inaugurated as the seventh mayor of the District on Friday under Home Rule and said that her administration will look “to reinvent our government,” and unveil “bold and pragmatic plans.”
"I will have grand expectations, like winning the Olympics for Washington, DC in 2024," Bowser said in her inaugural address. "I'll have simple ones, too—clear the snow, pick up the trash, pave the streets, synchronize the lights. I will hire the best people to achieve those goals.”
Among her key challenges upon taking office will be more than a $200-million budget deficit in the next fiscal year, stalled major transit projects, rising construction costs and shrinking borrowing capacity, according to the Washington Business Journal.
Also taking the oath of office on Friday were The District's first-ever elected attorney general, Karl Racine, and new council members: Elissa Silverman, Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
