NEW YORK CITY—Iconic piano manufacturer and retailer Steinway & Sons is relocating its corporate headquarters to more than 40,000 square feet of space at 1133 Ave. of the Americas.

Steinway will shift operations from its current headquarters of 90 years at 109 West 57th St. The 15-year lease deal at the 45-story 1133 Ave. of the Americas tower was reported jointly by building owner The Durst Organization and brokerage firm Cassidy Turley. Steinway, which was required to vacate 109 West 57th St. by the end of 2014, also secured short-term space for a temporary “pop up store” at 1155 Ave. of the Americas, another Durst-owned property. This short-term space will allow Steinway to remain open as the new headquarters is being constructed.

Steinway enlisted Cassidy Turley executive vice chairman and principal Richard Bernstein, senior managing director Susan Kahaner and senior vice president Jennifer Ogden to find new space suitable for a ground-floor retail showroom, recording studio and office space for Steinway staff. The team worked with The Durst Organization's in-house representatives, Thomas Bow, senior vice president and director of leasing and Rocco Romeo, senior leasing manager for the company.

"Cassidy Turley's team identified an opportunity with Durst at 1133 Ave. of the Americas as a fantastic location for Steinway's new home," says Bernstein. "Steinway's new corner location is more centrally located, allowing the company to capture a new audience while still being accessible to its existing customers and Steinway artists."

Steinway will have a gallery that encompasses approximately 18,000 square feet of both retail and showroom space on the ground floor, and a small concert hall that will be catered to the world's most prominent pianists. Architect Annabelle Selldorf will design the space. There will also be a private space that can be used by concert pianists looking to sample Steinway's collection of instruments. The company is also leasing 23,000 square feet on the 33rd floor for office space for its New York headquarters.

”We are proud to have as distinguished an organization as Steinway & Sons join us at 1133 Avenue of the Americas,” says Jonathan Durst, president of The Durst Organization. “This modern classic will make a beautiful gallery and home for the world's finest piano maker. In addition, we are very excited that Steinway will use our retail location at 1155 Ave. of the Americas as their 'Pop-Up' shop until their space at 1133 is ready. Steinway's presence on Sixth Avenue is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood.”

Founded in 1853, Steinway & Sons is one of the premier piano manufacturers in the world handcrafting more than 2,500 pianos worldwide, per year. The company operates factories in Astoria, Queens and Hamburg, Germany.
