WASHINGTON, DC—It appears that DC Mayor Muriel Bowser may be the last chairman of the Council's Economic Development Committee.

Council Chairman Phil Mendelson has decided to reduce the number of council committees to eight. He has opted to merge the committees of health and human services, and cease operations of the economic development and the government operations panels.

The economic development committee was chaired by now Mayor Bowser, during the last council session. The council adopted its rules for the current session on Jan. 2, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Councilwoman Anita Bonds will chair a new Committee on Housing and Community Development. The panel will have oversight of advisory neighborhood commissions, the DC Housing Authority and the Housing Production Trust Fund, the Office on Aging and the Commission for Women, and other agencies.
