EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—The deal reached last week that will shutter the Izod Center here will definitely hurt hotels nearby the facility that will feel the impact of lost business—including the now cancelled World Wrestling Entertainment's SummerSlam event this August.

The Hilton Meadowlands had a contract with the Stamford, CT-based WWE to rent 600 hotel rooms for three days around Aug. 23. Now that WWE is looking for a new venue, it is likely that even if the event is held at the Prudential Center in Newark, the WWE will likely book rooms at a hotel closer to Newark, according to The Record.

Steve Kaiser, general manager of the Hilton Meadowlands, estimates the Izod Center closure could reduce the number of rooms rented by area hotels by approximately 4,000 or 5,000 a year.

"If you were from South Jersey, and you wanted to see 'Frozen on Ice,' and you also wanted to do a day trip into Manhattan, you might stay with us," he says. "Most of the stuff over there (Izod Center) is primarily folks coming for the day, but there is a lot of folks that stay here because they want to go into the city." See story in The Record.
