WASHINGTON, DC—A partnership announced last year between soccer clubs D.C. United and Sunderland AFC of England could affect the new stadium project here in Buzzard Point.

At a reception hosted by the British Embassy last week, officials with both clubs suggested the partnership could have some influence on United's new $300-million Buzzard Point stadium project, according to the Washington Business Journal.

"We'll be advising the guys with the new stadium development and what worked for us when we moved to the Stadium of Light," said Gary Hutchinson, Sunderland's commercial director. Sunderland moved to the Stadium of Light in 1997,

D.C. United CEO Tom Hunt says the clubs have discussed possible joint commercial opportunities as well as the possibility of a joint stadium naming-rights deal. The new D.C. United Stadium is expected to be completed in 2017. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
