PARAMUS, NJ—Bergen County Executive James Tedesco remains committed to not selling the county-owned Bergen Regional Medical Center here and plans to establish a committee to make recommendations on the hospital's future.
Tedesco in a speech before 150 members of the Health Professionals and Allied Employees Union said that the hospital will not be sold when the current lease with a private operator expires in 2017.
Tedesco added that there likely will be a brief “transition period” once the lease expires and that unlike the current 19-year lease, any new contract with an operator must include opportunities to reopen negotiations, according to The Record.
Tedesco modified his plans for a Veteran's Administration facility on the campus, noting that federal funding may be available to build a free-standing building on the campus rather than incorporating it into the existing hospital space.
The county executive told the union workers about the excellent care his late wife Renee received at Bergen Regional Medical Center after a double lung transplant, and about the care he got when he underwent treatment for cancer. See story in The Record.
