PHILADELPHIA—Hoteliers in the Philadelphia area are rejoicing as the Democratic Party selected the City of Brotherly Love over other finalists Brooklyn, NY and Columbus, OH for its 2016 National Convention.

In making the announcement Thursday, DNC Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz says, "In addition to their commitment to a seamless and safe convention, Philadelphia's deep rooted place in American history provides a perfect setting for this special gathering. I cannot wait to join Democrats across the country to celebrate our shared values, lay out a Democratic vision for the future, and support our nominee.”

The convention, which will be held the week of July 25, should provide a shot in the arm for the city and particularly for its hotel and restaurant businesses.

The DNC anticipates 50,000 attendees, filling up to 80,000 hotel room-nights, based on projections from its 2008 convention in Denver, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Philadelphia played host to the Republican National Convention in 2000, when the GOP gathered from July 31-Aug. 3. See story in the Philadelphia Business Journal.
