ELLENVILLE, NY—After being spurned by the New York State Gaming Location Board on its casino bid back in November, the ownership of the storied Nevele hotel and resort here has proposed a new $100-million plan for the shuttered facility.
The plan calls for the development of a $25-million world class athletic facility. In addition, the scaled-back plan from its estimated nearly $600-million casino proposal, would include 750 video lottery terminals (VLTs) and four, full-sized baseball fields and eight regulation fields for soccer, field hockey and lacrosse. The plan also features 210 hotel rooms.
The Nevele has made a request to the Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office for support for legislative approval to operate 750 VLTs at the Nevele. The added amenity would give the project the necessary boost to make it financially viable and permit full operation of the property year-round, Nevele officials state.
“While we are disappointed that the Nevele was not recommended for a casino license, we are still committed to redeveloping the property, creating economic opportunity for area residents and returning the Catskills region to its former glory,” says Michael Treanor, CEO of Nevele Investors, LLC.
Programmed by Sports Facility Advisors, the planned “Sportsplex” will include synthetic turf fields, indoor aquatics center and an array of athletic technology.
“Having devoted much time and effort to preparing the Nevele for redevelopment, completing the SEQRA process, and most importantly having rallied the entire region in an unprecedented manner around the Nevele as the catalyst for revitalizing southern Ulster County, letting those efforts go to waste is not considered an option for Ellenville,” Treanor says. “Our 'Plan B' for the Nevele will complement the planned Sullivan County casino project at Montreign and bring real economic opportunity to southern Ulster County.”
The project will be built on the Nevele resort property and the neighboring site of the former Horses in the Sun venue in Wawarsing, which the development team acquired control of last year.
Most of the existing Nevele resort buildings will be demolished and a new main building will be constructed to connect the redeveloped Tower and Empire buildings, Nevele officials say. Golf, skiing, skating and all other recreational facilities at the resort will be upgraded and reopened.
