MIAMI—Jim Cowdery is returning to Skanska USA. This time around, he's coming aboard as vice president of preconstruction for the company's Florida operations. Skanska is one of Florida's largest construction and development firms.

Cowdery is a 32-year industry veteran with strong track record in the construction industry. He has experience in many markets, including healthcare and life sciences, higher education, aviation, government, and sports and entertainment and photo voltaic.

In his role as vice president of preconstruction, Cowdery will supervise a group of 15 professionals. He will also oversee operations prior to starting construction, including assisting owners, designers and engineers in meeting project objectives.

“Jim is a great asset to our team,” says Fred Hames, Skanska USA Building's general manager and executive vice president for Florida. “With his experience and expertise, Skanska will continue to be a leader in technological innovation in the Southeast. In his role, he will support our plans for further market expansion across Florida, as well as help streamline and simplify the preconstruction process.”

Cowdery worked for Skanska from 1994 to 2004, where he quickly moved from a preconstruction services manager to vice president of preconstruction services based out of Orlando. During his time at Skanska, he worked on the Federal Courthouse in Jacksonville, The Setai in Miami Beach, Universal Studios' Island of Adventure and Hard Rock Live in Orlando, as well as many greenfield hospitals and 12 healthcare campuses.

“Coming back to Skanska is like coming home,” says Cowdery.  “It's great to rejoin such a talented team and I look forward to enhancing our preconstruction services and supporting the many projects we will develop ahead.”

Cowdery has a building construction degree from the University of Florida and is a former adjunct professor at Florida International University. He was also on the board of directors of the Associated Builders and Contractors' Florida Gulf Coast chapter and vice president of Professional Construction Estimators Association of America's Orlando chapter. He will be based in the Tampa office.

Skanska is certainly growing its presence in Florida. Skanska and HOK won a $122.5 million airport deal in Tampa in late 2014. Also in late December, Skanska signed a $101 million contract to build the Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Science in Miami. The firm is also working on a $2.3 billion revamp of the Interstate 4 corridor that runs through Central Florida.
