WASHINGTON, DC—The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking alternative space from its current location at Two White Flint, according to a solicitation published in FedBizOpps.gov. The agency could take as much as 348,000 square feet at an alternative building in Montgomery or Prince George's County, when its lease at 11545 Rockville Pike expires in December 2018.
The solicitation is indicative of GSA's backlog of long-term leases that it must now address. This particular lease, however, also comes a small bit of controversial back history.
The House of Representatives came close to forcing the agency to select another site in December 2013 when the short-term lease came up for renewal, the Washington Business Journal noted. It had learned that it needed only a fraction of the space at the nearby Three White Flint, the publication said. The House backed down when a compromise was reached, in which the Food and Drug Administration moved into the empty space, WBJ said.
