WASHINGTON, DC—Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair of USGBC, will be stepping down from his role at the end of 2016. Fedrizzi informed the board of directors on Sunday that he would be making this move.

The board has already set up (in apparently record time) a search committee to identify candidates for the CEO position, Fedrizzi told the USGBC community on Sunday in a letter. The goal is to find someone in time so he can work with that person to insure a smooth transition.

Fedrizzi's departure is a significant one for the organization as he was among the founders that started the organization 22 years ago. "I don't think any of us could have imagined the organization would become what it is today," he wrote in his email.

"We set out to simply build better buildings, but we quickly learned that in doing so, we were changing the world."

Now, though, "USGBC has reached a point in its maturity where I feel comfortable making this decision, knowing that I will continue to contribute to the ongoing trajectory of the green building movement as a volunteer in any way I can."

Fedrizzi's green building creds are extensive, expanding beyond just the USGBC. In 2009 he also became CEO of the newly created Green Building Certification Institute, a third-party organization initially established to provide credentialing and certification services for LEED that recently acquired several other clients, including GRESB, WELL, PEER, SITES and EDGE.
