NEW YORK CITY—As the publishing giant prepares to relocate its headquarters from its longtime Midtown base to Downtown Manhattan, Time Inc. has signed a long-term lease at Industry City in Brooklyn. More than 300 employees in the company's technology, content solutions and editorial innovation departments will move to a 55,000-square-foot space at the complex by year's end.
Those three departments, which will occupy two floors of 25,000 square feet each, will be joined on the ground floor by employees involved with theDRIVE, a new editorial product devoted to cars and the car culture. Time Inc. staffers associated with this product will occupy a 5,000 square-foot showroom on the ground floor.
The 16-building Industry City complex in Sunset Park already is home to a tenant roster including the Brooklyn Nets, Design Within Reach and MakerBot. Andrew Kimball, Industry City's CEO, says the media company's move is “further proof that Industry City is at the forefront of New York's technology and innovation boom, and is the location where start-ups as well as major firms like Time Inc. want to grow together in a unique innovation ecosystem.”
A Savills Studley team of Zev Holzman, Howard Nottingham and Matthew Barlow represented Time Inc. in lease negotiations. Cushman & Wakefield's Bruce Mosler, Mitchell Arkin, Kelli Berke, Joseph Cirone, Haley Fisher and Mikael Nahmias represented ownership.
“Time Inc.'s goal for its Brooklyn space from the beginning was to create and foster its own hub of creativity and innovation,” Holzman says. “Industry City offered an incredibly authentic opportunity to achieve that in a campus setting and in close proximity to where today's young, creative workforce have planted roots.”
It's more than the “incredible industrial space and modern amenities” that attract tenants such as Time Inc. to Industry City, says Mosler. “They're coming because they want to be a part of the vibrant and diverse community of creatives and makers that's growing there. These companies are looking to create work environments where employees can be inspired by their neighbors and their surroundings, and Industry City is the place that can deliver.”
