RICHMOND—BB&T Capital Markets is adding new hires that specialize in the REIT asset class as the financial institution builds up its investment banking creds, with dedicated equity research and sales and trading capabilities.

"We are fully committed to serving the needs of this important market segment for BB&T," said Rufus Yates, president and CEO of BB&T Securities, in a prepared statement.

David Toti, managing director, is senior equity research analyst covering REITs. Based in New York City, Toti was awarded the 2015 StarMine "Top Stock Picker" award for US REITs. Evan Smith, has joined the equity research team as vice president, and will cover REITs under Toti.

G. Berkeley Edmunds, managing director, has joined the team as a senior sales trader focusing on REITs.

David Wojdyla, managing director, was recently promoted to head of real estate investment banking.

According to its website, BB&T Capital Markets has committed more than $3.5 billion to the REIT sector through 2014, making it one of its fastest growing industry verticals.
