BOSTON—Sporting goods retailer City Sports, which recently filed bankruptcy protection, is closing one-and-a-half-dozen stores in Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, DC.
City Sports, a more than 30-year-old Boston-based company, filed for bankruptcy in Delaware in October. The company announced at the time plans to shutter eight store locations but remain in business. However, on Thursday it was announced that the joint venture of Gordon Brothers and Hilco Merchant Resources obtained bankruptcy court approval to conduct going-out-of-business sales at the chain's remaining 18 locations. The going-out-of business sales began Friday.
The retailer had opened a new 10,000-square-foot location as recently as September 9th at 2920 District Ave. in Fairfax, VA, 15 miles from Washington, DC.

"Although we are closing our doors, we hope our shoppers will use this opportunity to purchase items they love and continue to enjoy the active lifestyle we have always promoted at City Sports."
Hanaka was appointed CEO of the company in July of this year. Hanaka served on the board of directors for City Sports since 2008 and spent the last year as an operating partner at the Highland Consumer Fund had previous tenures as chairman and CEO of Golfsmith International Holdings, Inc., chairman and CEO of Sports Authority and interim CEO of Guitar Center, Inc.
City Sports, which was founded in 1983, operates nine locations in Massachusetts, including four in Boston and two in Cambridge. It operates two stores in New York City, one at Rockefeller Center and the other on Broadway. Also to be shuttered are two locations in Washington, DC, one in Maryland, three in Pennsylvania and one in Virginia.
Gordon Brothers Group and Hilco Merchant Resources did not reveal closing dates for the City Sports stores, but notes that sales will offer discounts of up to 30% on all shoes, clothing, athletic gear and accessories including brands such as Under Armour, Nike, Marmot, Patagonia, the North Face, UGG Australia, ASICS and Brooks. Store fixtures, furniture and equipment will also be available for sale.
