WASHINGTON, DC—Skanska has signed a contract to modernize and expand the Lafayette Elementary School. The contract's total value is $72 million, with the initial phase worth about $21 million.
The school, which is located on 5701 Broad Branch Rd NW, was built in the 1930s followed by an addition in the 1970s. The expansion project will replace the section added in the 1970s plus add additional square footage, restore the existing schoolhouse façade, renovate the interior the 1930s structures and make other changes, including those necessary to meet the latest DC Department of Environment requirements.
The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. Preconstruction began in February 2015 and the project is slated for completion in November 2016.
