EVERETT, MA—Suffolk Construction Co. has secured the largest contract award in its history. Wynn Resorts reports it has selected the Boston-based firm as the general contractor for its $1.7-billion Wynn Resort in Everett, MA.
A spokesman for Suffolk Construction says that construction is expected to begin in the spring of this year on the 3-million-square-foot project that is considered the largest private single-phase construction project in the history of Massachusetts. The value of the contract was not released.
Preparation and remediation of the 33-acre Wynn site along the Mystic River began in October of 2015 and is progressing on schedule, Wynn Resorts states in the announcement. Construction of the Wynn Resort in Everett will generate 4,000 union trade jobs that cover 10 million total work hours. An additional 4,000 permanent operational jobs will be created when the resort is scheduled to open in late 2018.
"Building a five-star resort that meets the Wynn quality standards requires an attention to detail that is unwavering," states Robert DeSalvio, president of Wynn Everett. "Suffolk Construction shares our values and is working with us full speed to meet our groundbreaking target."
John Fish, CEO of Suffolk Construction, termed the award as a "landmark project." He adds, "Suffolk Construction is working with the union trades to open these opportunities to veterans, minorities, woman and all tradespeople across Wynn's host and surrounding communities."
The casino resort will feature more than 600 hotel rooms, a high-end spa, retail, dining, ballroom and meeting space. The casino will also include a total of 4,580 gaming positions.
In late August the casino project secured key environmental approvals from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The project has been controversial and has been the subject of litigation by opponents, including the City of Boston. Last month, a Suffolk County Superior Court Judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the City of Boston seeking to prevent the project from being built. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission awarded the casino license to Wynn Resorts in the fall of 2014.
In July of last year, Wynn Resorts announced that Requests for Proposals and solicitation of bids were issued for the first-phase of design and construction of the Wynn Resort in Everett. Requests were issued to qualified local firms for off-site roadway improvement design, environmental cleanup, building demolition design and site preparation and fencing. The combined value of the four contracts was approximately $50 million.
In addition to past work on such gaming projects as the Dania Casino and Jai Alai in Dania, FL and the Quechan Casino Resort in Winterhaven, CA, the company is working on some of the more high-profile projects in the Boston area, including the Millennium Tower (construction value: $400 million); the Brigham and Women's Hospital (construction value: $350 million) as well as the One Dalton high-rise tower.
Among its more high-profile past projects have included the Mandarin Oriental—Boston Hotel and Residences (construction value: $282 million); The Liberty Hotel (construction value: $75 million): and the Boston Opera House (construction value: $31.4 million).
