MIAMI—Josh Rodstein and Brandon Weiss specialize in retail tenant representation at NAI Miami. Rodstein is senior director and Weiss is director at NAI Miami.
Some of the duo's notable clients are Massage Envy, OrangeTheory Fitness, European Wax Center, Jimmy Johns, and Pure Barre. Both Rodstein and Weiss were named 2015 CoStar Power Brokers for Retail Leasing. GlobeSt.com caught up with them to learn how they got their start.
GlobeSt.com: How did you get your start in commercial real estate?
Rodstein: After being a manufacturing engineer that was involved with facilities management in Houston, I decided my personality was better served being involved in selling. Real estate was a profession I was interested in pursuing and was hired by a mall developer called Ainbinder Bramalea. My commercial real estate career started as a leasing agent for small enclosed malls in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Weiss: I moved to Miami in 2001 after passing the bar exam in New York and Florida. I had been practicing law for two years when I realized how much I did not enjoy being a lawyer. I quit my job, not knowing exactly what I wanted to do, but was encouraged by my father to explore the commercial real estate industry. I met with many different people and companies in the industry until I found NAI Miami.
GlobeSt.com: What have been some of the key turning points in your career?
Rodstein: First, dealing with the economic decline from 1983—1986 in Houston. It was brutal. But I survived. Secondly, it was moving to Miami and starting a new job as a retail leasing agent with a local developer. Best decision I ever made.
Weiss: Finding the right opportunity, company, and people to work with. This was the big first step. I was very fortunate to find partners that were willing to take a chance not only on someone new to the industry, but also new to South Florida. I had to learn both South Florida and the retail tenant representation. I spent the first three years driving every road from Jupiter to the Keys in order to know where the retail centers are located.
